Howard Lederer was born into in a family of five where he loved gambling on various card games at a young age. He discovered himself getting very competitive in these card games as he was playing his father. After finishing high school, Howard made a decision to place higher education on hold for a little while and relocated to New York City to participate in some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s initial two years were tough as he would play extensive hours and don’t win most times. He made some additional cash by becoming an assistant for the poker players. He judged he could improve his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He made an attempt to get more rest and concentrate even more on poker.
The real advancement in his abilities happened when he began playing at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable gamblers would frequently wager against each other. He was able to access a few of the foremost players in chess. With their assistance, Howard would tweak his strategic thinking techniques. He used these strategy ideas in the game of No-Limit Texas Holdem.
He also helped his sibling Annie Duke master poker. Annie was a great student of the game as she would consistently be asking questions about the right way to make the correct choice. Howard Lederer told Annie to move out to Sin City and compete in the WSOP tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the strongest women players the poker world has ever seen. He headed to Las Vegas in 1993 and played cash games for the following decade. When the WPT gained popularity, he decided to play more tournaments.
